The monastery was built in the year 328 the Eastern Jin Dynasty monk Hui Li, from India. Since its inception, Lingyin is famous temple in Southern Yangtze River area. The kingdom of Wu Yue ( 907-978 ) in its peak, the temple boasts of nine building, 18 hall, 72 hall, more than 1300 dormitory rooms, lived more than 3000 monks. Many rich Buddhist sculpture afelly Fung cave and surrounding mountains also date from this era.

In the Southern Song Dynasty, the temple is regarded as the area south of the Yangtze River are the 10 most important Zen temple one.
